Definition
Let be an open interval and let be a differentiable curve in the special orthogonal group. The matrix gives the orientation at time of a rotating body or frame relative to a fixed frame. For each the matrix is skew-symmetric. The angular velocity at time is the unique vector such that where is the cross product. Its length is the angular speed.
Remarks
The matrix is skew-symmetric because differentiating gives , and every skew-symmetric matrix acts as for exactly one vector . Example: rotation about the -axis by the angle gives , so . Non-example: the vector is not the angular velocity; the angle is a position, and only its rate enters. A point fixed in the body at has velocity . For a single particle at position with velocity , its angular velocity about the origin is often defined as .
