Definition

Let a homogeneous isotropic body have thermal conductivity k>0k > 0, density ρ>0\rho > 0 and specific heat c>0c > 0. Let τ>0\tau > 0 be a constant, the relaxation time. The Cattaneo–Vernotte equation is the law for the heat flux 𝐪\mathbf{q} τ ∂t𝐪+𝐪=−k ∇T.\tau \, \partial_t \mathbf{q} + \mathbf{q} = -k \, \nabla T. Together with the energy balance ρ c ∂tT+∇⋅𝐪=0\rho \, c \, \partial_t T + \nabla \cdot \mathbf{q} = 0, it gives, for twice differentiable fields, τ ∂t2T+∂tT=α ΔT,α=kρ c.\tau \, \partial_t^2 T + \partial_t T = \alpha \, \Delta T, \qquad \alpha = \frac{k}{\rho \, c}.

Remarks

Here α\alpha is the thermal diffusivity. To derive the second equation, differentiate the energy balance in tt and use τ ∂t𝐪=−k∇T−𝐪\tau \, \partial_t \mathbf{q} = -k \nabla T - \mathbf{q}. The temperature equation is hyperbolic, and its fronts move with speed α/τ\sqrt{\alpha / \tau}. As τ→0\tau \to 0 one recovers Fourier's law and the heat equation.

Example: in one dimension, try T=eλtcos⁡(κx)T = e^{\lambda t} \cos(\kappa x) with κ>0\kappa > 0. It is a solution exactly when τλ2+λ+ακ2=0\tau \lambda^2 + \lambda + \alpha \kappa^2 = 0. If 4τακ2>14 \tau \alpha \kappa^2 > 1, the roots λ\lambda are complex, so the profile oscillates in time while it decays.

Non-example: the Fourier law 𝐪=−k∇T\mathbf{q} = -k \nabla T is the case τ=0\tau = 0, which is excluded. For it, the same trial function gives only λ=−ακ2\lambda = -\alpha \kappa^2, a pure decay without oscillation.
