CCR algebra

Builds on Symplectic vector spaceC*-algebraStone–von Neumann theorem

Definition

Let (V,σ)(V, \sigma) be a real symplectic vector space, so σ\sigma is a nondegenerate alternating bilinear form on VV. A CCR algebra over (V,σ)(V, \sigma) is a C*-algebra 𝒜\mathcal{A} together with nonzero elements W(v)∈𝒜W(v) \in \mathcal{A}, one for each v∈Vv \in V, such that:

  1. W(v)∗=W(−v)W(v)^* = W(-v) for all v∈Vv \in V;
  2. W(u) W(v)=e−iσ(u,v)/2 W(u+v)W(u)\, W(v) = e^{-i\sigma(u, v)/2}\, W(u + v) for all u,v∈Vu, v \in V;
  3. 𝒜\mathcal{A} is the smallest C*-subalgebra of 𝒜\mathcal{A} containing all W(v)W(v).

Remarks

Clause 2 with u=v=0u = v = 0 gives W(0)2=W(0)W(0)^2 = W(0), and W(0)W(v)=W(v)=W(v)W(0)W(0) W(v) = W(v) = W(v) W(0), so W(0)W(0) is the unit of 𝒜\mathcal{A}. Then clauses 1 and 2 give W(v)∗W(v)=W(−v)W(v)=W(0)W(v)^* W(v) = W(-v) W(v) = W(0), so each W(v)W(v) is unitary. Such an algebra exists, and any two are isomorphic by a ∗*-isomorphism that matches the elements W(v)W(v); so one speaks of the CCR algebra CCR(V,σ)\mathrm{CCR}(V, \sigma).

Example: let V=ℝ2V = \R^2 with σ((a,b),(a′,b′))=ab′−a′b\sigma((a, b), (a', b')) = a b' - a' b, and let ℏ=1\hbar = 1. On L2(ℝ)L^2(\R) define (W(a,b)ψ)(x)=eib(x−a/2) ψ(x−a)(W(a, b)\psi)(x) = e^{i b (x - a/2)}\, \psi(x - a), which is ei(bQ−aP)e^{i(bQ - aP)} for the position QQ and momentum P=−i d/dxP = -i\, d/dx. A direct computation gives W(a,b)W(a′,b′)=ei(a′b−ab′)/2 W(a+a′,b+b′)=e−iσ((a,b),(a′,b′))/2 W(a+a′,b+b′)W(a, b) W(a', b') = e^{i(a' b - a b')/2}\, W(a + a', b + b') = e^{-i\sigma((a,b),(a',b'))/2}\, W(a + a', b + b'), and W(a,b)∗=W(−a,−b)W(a,b)^* = W(-a, -b). So the C*-algebra generated by these unitaries is the CCR algebra over ℝ2\R^2; this is the Schrödinger representation of the Stone–von Neumann theorem.

Non-example: the relation QP−PQ=iIQP - PQ = iI cannot be realized by bounded operators QQ and PP on a Hilbert space. So the unbounded generators are not elements of any C*-algebra, and this is the reason for clauses 1 and 2.

The map v↦W(v)v \mapsto W(v) is not norm continuous: ∥W(u)−W(v)∥=2\norm{W(u) - W(v)} = 2 whenever u≠vu \ne v.
