Definition
Let be a field with absolute Galois group , and let be a prime number. For a discrete torsion -module , let be the -primary part of the Galois cohomology group . The -cohomological dimension is the least integer with the following property. For all and all discrete torsion -modules , . If there is no such , then . The cohomological dimension of is .
Remarks
These are the cohomological dimensions and of the profinite group . It suffices to test one degree and simple modules: if and only if for every simple discrete -module with . Example: a finite field has , since is the profinite completion of , whose cohomology with torsion coefficients vanishes above degree , while . Example: if and only if is separably closed. Example: has , since has order and for all . More generally, a field with a nontrivial finite absolute Galois group has infinite cohomological dimension. If has characteristic , then . A finite extension of has cohomological dimension .
