Definition

Let KK be a field, KsK^s a separable closure of KK, and GK=Gal⁡(Ks/K)G_K = \Gal(K^s/K) the absolute Galois group with its Krull topology, a profinite group. A discrete GKG_K-module is an abelian group MM with a group action of GKG_K by group automorphisms. The stabilizer of each m∈Mm \in M must be an open subgroup of GKG_K.

For n≥0n \ge 0, let Cn(GK,M)C^n(G_K, M) be the group of continuous maps GKn→MG_K^n \to M, where MM has the discrete topology and C0(GK,M)=MC^0(G_K, M) = M. Define d ⁣:Cn(GK,M)→Cn+1(GK,M)d \colon C^n(G_K, M) \to C^{n+1}(G_K, M) by (dφ)(g1,…,gn+1)=g1φ(g2,…,gn+1)+∑i=1n(−1)iφ(g1,…,gigi+1,…,gn+1)+(−1)n+1φ(g1,…,gn).(d\varphi)(g_1, \ldots, g_{n+1}) = g_1 \varphi(g_2, \ldots, g_{n+1}) + \sum_{i=1}^{n} (-1)^i \varphi(g_1, \ldots, g_i g_{i+1}, \ldots, g_{n+1}) + (-1)^{n+1} \varphi(g_1, \ldots, g_n). Then d∘d=0d \circ d = 0. The Galois cohomology groups of KK with coefficients in MM are Hn(K,M)=Hn(GK,M)=ker⁡(d ⁣:Cn→Cn+1)/im⁡(d ⁣:Cn−1→Cn),H^n(K, M) = H^n(G_K, M) = \ker\big(d \colon C^n \to C^{n+1}\big) / \im\big(d \colon C^{n-1} \to C^n\big), with C−1=0C^{-1} = 0.

Remarks

The group H0(K,M)H^0(K, M) is the group MGKM^{G_K} of fixed elements. The group Hn(K,M)H^n(K, M) is also the direct limit, over finite Galois extensions L/KL/K inside KsK^s, of the group cohomology groups Hn(Gal⁡(L/K),MGal⁡(Ks/L))H^n(\Gal(L/K), M^{\Gal(K^s/L)}). Example: M=(Ks)×M = (K^s)^\times is a discrete GKG_K-module, since each element of KsK^s lies in a finite extension of KK, and its stabilizer contains the open subgroup fixing that extension. For it, H0(K,(Ks)×)=K×H^0(K, (K^s)^\times) = K^\times, H1(K,(Ks)×)=0H^1(K, (K^s)^\times) = 0 by Hilbert's Theorem 90, and H2(K,(Ks)×)H^2(K, (K^s)^\times) is the Brauer group of KK. For an integer mm not divisible by the characteristic of KK, with μm\mu_m the group of mm-th roots of unity in KsK^s, Kummer theory gives H1(K,μm)≅K×/(K×)mH^1(K, \mu_m) \cong K^\times / (K^\times)^m. Non-example: let ℓ\ell be a prime and ℤℓ(1)\Z_\ell(1) the inverse limit of the groups μℓn\mu_{\ell^n} in ℚ‾\overline{\Q}, with GℚG_\Q acting on each μℓn\mu_{\ell^n}. With the discrete topology, ℤℓ(1)\Z_\ell(1) is not a discrete GℚG_\Q-module. The stabilizer of a generator is the subgroup fixing all ℓ\ell-power roots of unity. It is closed but not open, because the field of all ℓ\ell-power roots of unity has infinite degree over ℚ\Q. For such modules one uses continuous cochains for the ℓ\ell-adic topology instead.
