Definition
Let be a countable set. A time-homogeneous continuous-time Markov chain on is a stochastic process with values in and right-continuous paths that has the following property. There are transition matrices , , such that, for all , all times and all states with ,
Remarks
The condition is the Markov property in continuous time, and it implies the Chapman–Kolmogorov equation . For a finite there is a rate matrix , the generator, with for and zero row sums, and is a matrix exponential. The chain stays in state for an exponential time with rate , then jumps to with probability , when . Example: the Poisson process of rate is a chain on with and , and for . Non-example: a process on that moves up by at the times is not time-homogeneous. Indeed is for and for , so no single works.
