Statement

Let ℰ\mathcal{E} be an elementary topos. Suppose that every epimorphism in ℰ\mathcal{E} has a section, that is, ℰ\mathcal{E} satisfies the axiom of choice. Then ℰ\mathcal{E} is Boolean: every subobject of every object of ℰ\mathcal{E} has a complement. Equivalently, the internal logic of ℰ\mathcal{E} satisfies the law of excluded middle.

Remarks

The same argument works in constructive set theory, where it is often given in the form of Goodman and Myhill. Let PP be a proposition, and let U={x∈{0,1}:x=0∨P}U = \set{x \in \set{0,1} : x = 0 \lor P} and V={x∈{0,1}:x=1∨P}V = \set{x \in \set{0,1} : x = 1 \lor P}. Both sets are inhabited, so a choice function on {U,V}\set{U, V} gives u∈Uu \in U and v∈Vv \in V. Equality on {0,1}\set{0,1} is decidable, so either u≠vu \ne v or u=vu = v. If u≠vu \ne v, then PP is false, because PP would give U=VU = V and hence u=vu = v; if u=vu = v, then either u=1∈Uu = 1 \in U or v=0∈Vv = 0 \in V, and in both cases PP holds. So P∨¬PP \lor \lnot P holds.

The converse fails. For a nontrivial group GG, the topos of GG-sets is Boolean. But the epimorphism from GG, acting on itself, to the one-point GG-set has no section, since GG has no fixed point. In the topos 𝐒𝐞𝐭\mathbf{Set}, both choice and excluded middle hold, in line with the theorem.

Going deeper

For a student

In a topos the logic is intuitionistic in general: the subobject classifier is an internal Heyting algebra, not a Boolean algebra. Diaconescu's theorem shows that choice forces this algebra to be Boolean. This is why constructive set theories and type theories use weaker forms such as countable choice or dependent choice.
