Earth's rotation
Builds on Angular velocityRigid body
Definition
Let be a terrestrial reference frame: an orthonormal frame attached to the Earth's crust, with origin at the centre of mass. Let be a celestial reference frame: an orthonormal frame whose axes are fixed relative to distant extragalactic sources. For each time , let map the coordinates of a vector in at time to its coordinates in . The rotation of the Earth is the function . Its angular velocity vector , in celestial coordinates, is defined by
Remarks
Example: a uniform rotation about the third axis with rate is , and one checks that , so . For the Earth, rad/s. Non-example: the orbital motion of the Earth around the Sun is a translation of the origin, not part of . In practice is factored into precession–nutation, the Earth rotation angle, and polar motion, whose parameters are published by the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service. The model treats the crust as a rigid body; the frame is defined so that the crust has no net rotation relative to it.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
