Example
The ideal Ericsson cycle is a thermodynamic cycle of moles of an ideal gas. It runs between a hot reservoir at temperature and a cold reservoir at temperature . Let be two pressures.
- Isothermal compression at from to .
- Isobaric heating at from to .
- Isothermal expansion at from to .
- Isobaric cooling at from to .
The gas returns to its initial state, so this is a cycle. For an ideal gas the internal energy depends only on temperature, so on each isotherm the heat equals the work. The gas takes in on the hot isotherm and gives off on the cold isotherm. The two isobaric steps exchange the same heat in opposite directions, where is the molar heat capacity at constant pressure. With an ideal regenerator this heat stays inside the engine, and the thermal efficiency is
Remarks
The Ericsson cycle is the constant-pressure analogue of the Stirling cycle, which uses isochoric steps instead of isobaric ones. Both reach the Carnot efficiency only because of the ideal regenerator.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
