Definition
Let be a scheme. The small étale site is the site defined as follows.
- Its objects are the étale morphisms .
- Its morphisms are the morphisms over .
- A family is a covering when the union of the images of the is .
An étale sheaf on is a sheaf on the site . The category of étale sheaves of abelian groups on has enough injectives. For such a sheaf , the étale cohomology groups , for , are the right derived functors of the global section functor .
Remarks
Example: let for a field with separable closure and Galois group . Étale -schemes are disjoint unions of spectra of finite separable extensions of . An étale sheaf is then the same as the discrete -module over finite subextensions . The global sections are , so is Galois cohomology. Non-example: if the étale morphisms in clause 1 are replaced by open immersions, one gets the Zariski site. For an irreducible and a constant sheaf , every constant sheaf is flasque in the Zariski topology, so for all . Étale cohomology does not have this defect: for a smooth projective curve of genus over an algebraically closed field and prime to the characteristic, .
