Definition
Let , let , and let be functions. Consider the stochastic differential equation with , where is a Brownian motion. Let , let , and let for . The Euler–Maruyama approximation is the sequence with and
Remarks
The increments are independent and normal with mean and variance . In a simulation one takes with independent standard normal . Example: for geometric Brownian motion, and , so . Non-example: the update uses noise of size instead of , so its noise vanishes in the limit. If , the scheme is the Euler method for the ordinary equation . Assume that and are Lipschitz in uniformly in , grow at most linearly, and are Hölder continuous of exponent in . Then for a constant .
