Definition
Consider a straight fin of length with constant cross-section area and perimeter , attached at to a base at temperature . The fin has thermal conductivity and lies in a fluid at temperature with heat transfer coefficient . Assume steady state, temperature uniform over each cross-section, and constant and . Put and . The fin equation is completed by a condition at the tip .
Remarks
The equation is the energy balance of a thin slice: conduction by Fourier's law gives , and the loss from the sides is .
Example: with an insulated tip, , the solution is , using hyperbolic functions. Check: , and . The heat removed is .
Non-example: a fin whose cross-section shrinks towards the tip does not satisfy this equation, since and depend on . Its equation has variable coefficients.
For a very long fin, and . The fin efficiency with insulated tip is .
