FTCS scheme

Definition
Let and consider the heat equation in one space dimension. Let and , and let denote the approximation of for integers and . Put . The FTCS scheme is the explicit finite difference scheme It comes from replacing by the forward difference and by the centred difference .
Remarks
Its local truncation error is for smooth solutions. Von Neumann analysis gives the amplification factor , so the scheme is stable if and only if . For the new value is a convex combination of old values, which gives a discrete maximum principle. Example: with the scheme reads . Starting from and for , one step gives and all other values ; the total heat stays . Non-example: the Crank–Nicolson scheme also uses centred differences in space, but it evaluates them at the new time level as well. So it is implicit and is not the FTCS scheme. The same forward-time, centred-space construction applied to the advection equation with is unstable for every ratio .
