Generator of a semigroup
Definition
Let be a Banach space and let be a strongly continuous semigroup of bounded operators on . The generator of is the linear operator with domain given by
Remarks
The generator is closed and densely defined, and it determines the semigroup. For , the map is differentiable, stays in , and satisfies . One writes .
Example: let be a bounded operator on and , the exponential of a bounded operator. Then , so the generator is with .
Example: on , the continuous functions that tend to at infinity with the sup norm, let . Its generator is with domain the functions such that and lie in .
Non-example: the operator on smooth functions with compact support is not the generator of this shift semigroup. It is a proper restriction of : the limit in the definition exists for more functions, and the generator is defined on all of them.
The Hille–Yosida theorem and the Lumer–Phillips theorem say which operators are generators.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
