Statement

Let XX be a real or complex Banach space. Let A ⁣:D(A)→XA \colon D(A) \to X be a linear operator with domain D(A)⊆XD(A) \subseteq X. Then AA is the generator of a strongly continuous contraction semigroup (T(t))t≥0(T(t))_{t \ge 0} on XX if and only if the following two conditions hold.

  1. AA is a closed operator and is densely defined.
  2. Every real λ>0\lambda > 0 lies in the resolvent set of AA, and ∥(λI−A)−1∥≤1λ\norm{(\lambda I - A)^{-1}} \le \dfrac{1}{\lambda}.

Remarks

The necessity comes from the resolvent formula (λI−A)−1x=∫0∞e−λtT(t)x dt(\lambda I - A)^{-1} x = \int_0^\infty e^{-\lambda t} T(t) x \, dt, whose norm is at most ∥x∥/λ\norm{x} / \lambda when ∥T(t)∥≤1\norm{T(t)} \le 1. For the converse, one forms the Yosida approximations Aλ=λA(λI−A)−1=λ2(λI−A)−1−λIA_\lambda = \lambda A (\lambda I - A)^{-1} = \lambda^2 (\lambda I - A)^{-1} - \lambda I. They are bounded operators, the exponentials etAλe^{t A_\lambda} are contractions, and they converge strongly as λ→∞\lambda \to \infty to a semigroup with generator AA. The general form concerns semigroups with ∥T(t)∥≤Meωt\norm{T(t)} \le M e^{\omega t} for constants M≥1M \ge 1 and ω∈ℝ\omega \in \R. The operator AA generates such a semigroup if and only if it is closed and densely defined, (ω,∞)(\omega, \infty) lies in its resolvent set, and ∥(λI−A)−n∥≤M(λ−ω)−n\norm{(\lambda I - A)^{-n}} \le M (\lambda - \omega)^{-n} for all λ>ω\lambda > \omega and n≥1n \ge 1. Example: on X=ℂX = \C, the operator Ax=axA x = a x with Re⁡a≤0\operatorname{Re} a \le 0 satisfies ∣(λ−a)−1∣≤1/λ\abs{(\lambda - a)^{-1}} \le 1/\lambda for λ>0\lambda > 0, and it generates the contractions T(t)=eatT(t) = e^{a t}. If a>0a > 0 is real, then λ=a\lambda = a is not in the resolvent set, and indeed eat>1e^{a t} > 1 for t>0t > 0, so no contraction semigroup has this generator. The Lumer–Phillips theorem replaces condition 2 by dissipativity and a range condition, which are often easier to check.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem turns an abstract Cauchy problem u′=Auu' = A u, u(0)=u0u(0) = u_0, in a Banach space into a question about the resolvent of AA. For a densely defined closed operator, the resolvent bound is checked by solving the stationary equation λu−Au=f\lambda u - A u = f with an a priori estimate λ∥u∥≤∥f∥\lambda \norm{u} \le \norm{f}. This is how one shows that the heat equation and many parabolic equations are well posed. The semigroup is then the abstract replacement for the matrix exponential etAe^{tA} of a system of linear ordinary differential equations. The Lumer–Phillips theorem is the form used most often in Hilbert spaces.
