Instant centre of rotation
Builds on Angular velocityVelocity
Definition
Let be the rotation of by . Let a rigid body move in the plane by , where labels a point of the body. Here and are differentiable in time . At time the velocity of the body point located at is where is the angular velocity, defined by . If , the instant centre of rotation at time is the unique point with .
Remarks
Solving gives , using . Then for every : each point moves perpendicular to the segment joining it to , with speed .
Example: a wheel of radius rolling to the right along the line at unit speed has hub and . Then , the contact point with the ground.
Non-example: if is constant, so , and , then for all and no point is at rest; the definition does not apply. The instant centre is also called the instantaneous centre of rotation or the pole of the motion.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
