Definition

Let BB be a Boolean algebra with meet ∧\wedge, greatest element 11 and order ≤\le. An interior operator on BB is a map I ⁣:B→BI \colon B \to B such that for all x,y∈Bx, y \in B:

  1. I(1)=1I(1) = 1;
  2. I(x)≤xI(x) \le x;
  3. I(I(x))=I(x)I(I(x)) = I(x);
  4. I(x∧y)=I(x)∧I(y)I(x \wedge y) = I(x) \wedge I(y).

An interior algebra is a pair (B,I)(B, I) of a Boolean algebra BB and an interior operator II on BB.

Remarks

Example: let XX be a topological space and let BB be the power set of XX. Let I(A)I(A) be the interior of AA. The interior of XX is XX, and the interior of AA lies in AA. The interior of an open set is the set itself, and I(A∩A′)=I(A)∩I(A′)I(A \cap A') = I(A) \cap I(A'). So the four clauses hold. Non-example: on a Boolean algebra with 0≠10 \ne 1, the map I(x)=0I(x) = 0 for all xx satisfies clauses 2, 3 and 4, but fails clause 1. Clause 4 implies that II is monotone: if x≤yx \le y, then I(x)=I(x∧y)=I(x)∧I(y)≤I(y)I(x) = I(x \wedge y) = I(x) \wedge I(y) \le I(y). The map C(x)=¬I(¬x)C(x) = \neg I(\neg x) is the dual closure operator; a Boolean algebra with such a closure operator is a closure algebra. Interior algebras are the algebraic semantics of the modal logic S4, with II interpreting the necessity operator □\square.
