Definition

Let II be an open interval of ℝ\R, and let f ⁣:I→ℝf \colon I \to \R be a differentiable function whose derivative f′f' is strictly increasing on II. Let J=f′(I)J = f'(I); it is an interval, and f′ ⁣:I→Jf' \colon I \to J is a bijection with inverse g ⁣:J→Ig \colon J \to I. The Legendre transform of ff is the function f∗ ⁣:J→ℝf^* \colon J \to \R given by f∗(p)=p g(p)−f(g(p)).f^*(p) = p \, g(p) - f(g(p)). The map f↦f∗f \mapsto f^* is the Legendre transformation.

Remarks

For p∈Jp \in J one has f∗(p)=sup⁡x∈I(px−f(x))f^*(p) = \sup_{x \in I} \big(p x - f(x)\big), and the supremum is attained at x=g(p)x = g(p). Indeed x↦px−f(x)x \mapsto p x - f(x) has derivative p−f′(x)p - f'(x), which is positive for x<g(p)x < g(p) and negative for x>g(p)x > g(p). The function f∗f^* is differentiable with (f∗)′=g=(f′)−1(f^*)' = g = (f')^{-1}, and (f∗)∗=f(f^*)^* = f. The supremum formula, taken over all xx, defines the convex conjugate of any function, which extends this definition.

Example: f(x)=exf(x) = e^x on ℝ\R. Here f′(x)=exf'(x) = e^x is strictly increasing, J=(0,∞)J = (0, \infty) and g(p)=ln⁡pg(p) = \ln p. So f∗(p)=pln⁡p−pf^*(p) = p \ln p - p for p>0p > 0.

Non-example: f(x)=x3f(x) = x^3 on ℝ\R. Its derivative 3x23x^2 is not strictly increasing, since 3⋅(−1)2=3⋅123 \cdot (-1)^2 = 3 \cdot 1^2, so the definition does not apply.
