Functions of a complex variable Definition
Order of an entire function
Definition
Let be an entire function that is not constant. For , let . The order of is where is the limit superior. By convention, constant functions have order .
Remarks
Equivalently, is the infimum of the numbers such that for all sufficiently large . Example: for , , so and the order is . Non-example for a bound: does not satisfy for large when , so its order is not at most . For a nonconstant polynomial, with the degree, so the order is . In terms of the Taylor coefficients of , the order is , where terms with are omitted. If , the type of is ; functions of order and finite type, or of order less than , are those of exponential type.
