Functions of a complex variable Entire and meromorphic functions Theorem

Picard's little theorem

Builds on Entire function

Statement

Let ff be an entire function that is not constant. Then the set ℂ∖f(ℂ)\C \setminus f(\C) has at most one point. That is, ff takes every complex value with at most one exception.

Remarks

One classical proof uses the modular lambda function, which gives a holomorphic covering map from the unit disc onto ℂ∖{0,1}\C \setminus \set{0, 1}. If ff omits two values, one may assume that they are 00 and 11. Then ff lifts through this covering to an entire function with values in the unit disc, which is constant by Liouville's theorem, so ff is constant. Another proof uses Bloch's theorem. The bound is sharp: eze^z is not constant and omits exactly the value 00. For polynomials no value is omitted, by the fundamental theorem of algebra.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem has a version for meromorphic functions: a nonconstant meromorphic function on ℂ\C omits at most two values of the Riemann sphere, as tan⁡z\tan z omits ii and −i-i. Picard's great theorem is a local version near an essential singularity and implies the little theorem: if ff is not a polynomial, then f(1/z)f(1/z) has an essential singularity at 00. The second main theorem of Nevanlinna theory gives a quantitative form: for three distinct values, the solutions of f(z)=af(z) = a must be numerous. Through Bloch's principle, the theorem is linked to Montel's theorem on normal families.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
