Definition
Let be a field and let be polynomials that are not both . A greatest common divisor of and is a polynomial such that:
- divides and divides ;
- every polynomial that divides both and divides .
The greatest common divisor is the unique monic polynomial with these two properties.
Remarks
Two greatest common divisors differ by a nonzero constant factor, so exactly one of them is monic. Example: . Check: divides both, and a common divisor divides , hence divides . Non-example: satisfies both clauses, but it is not monic, so it is a greatest common divisor and not . The Euclidean algorithm computes , and Bézout's identity gives with . Over a unique factorisation domain such as , greatest common divisors in also exist, but only up to units, see greatest common divisor in an integral domain.
