Factorization of polynomials over finite fields

Builds on Finite fieldFactorization of polynomialsPolynomial greatest common divisorFormal derivative

Definition

Let 𝔽q\F_q be the finite field with qq elements and let f∈𝔽q[x]f \in \F_q[x] be a nonzero polynomial. Factoring ff over 𝔽q\F_q means computing its factorization into irreducibles f=c p1e1⋯pkekf = c \, p_1^{e_1} \cdots p_k^{e_k} in 𝔽q[x]\F_q[x]. The standard algorithms do this in three stages:

  1. square-free factorization: write the monic part of ff as g1g22⋯gssg_1 g_2^2 \cdots g_s^s, with the gig_i square-free and pairwise coprime, using gcd⁡(f,f′)\gcd(f, f') for the formal derivative f′f';
  2. distinct-degree factorization: for a square-free monic gg, compute for each d≥1d \ge 1 the product hdh_d of the monic irreducible factors of gg of degree dd;
  3. equal-degree factorization: split each hdh_d into its irreducible factors of degree dd.

Remarks

Stage 2 uses that xqd−xx^{q^d} - x is the product of all monic irreducible polynomials in 𝔽q[x]\F_q[x] whose degree divides dd. So h1=gcd⁡(g,xq−x)h_1 = \gcd(g, x^q - x), and hdh_d is the gcd of xqd−xx^{q^d} - x with gg divided by h1⋯hd−1h_1 \cdots h_{d-1}. In stage 1, if f′=0f' = 0 then ff is a pp-th power, where pp is the characteristic, since every element of 𝔽q\F_q is a pp-th power. Stage 3 is usually done with a randomised method, such as the Cantor–Zassenhaus algorithm; Berlekamp's algorithm is a deterministic alternative to stages 2 and 3. Example: over 𝔽2\F_2, g=x3+1g = x^3 + 1 is square-free, gcd⁡(g,x2−x)=x+1\gcd(g, x^2 - x) = x + 1, so h1=x+1h_1 = x + 1 and h2=x2+x+1h_2 = x^2 + x + 1. Non-example: (x+1)(x3+1)=(x+1)2(x2+x+1)(x + 1)(x^3 + 1) = (x + 1)^2 (x^2 + x + 1) is not square-free, so stage 2 does not apply before stage 1.
