Definition
Let a rigid body turn about a fixed point . Let be a unit vector fixed in the body, such as a symmetry axis. Let be a fixed unit vector in space, such as the upward vertical. Describe the orientation of the body by Euler angles with respect to . Here is the angle between and , and is the azimuth of about . The angle is the angle of rotation of the body about . The precession of the body is the change of the angle in time, that is, the rotation of the axis about . Its rate is the precession rate.
Remarks
The angular velocity of the body is , where is the unit vector along the line of nodes, perpendicular to and . So the motion splits into precession , nutation and spin . The angle is defined only when .
Example: a symmetric top with mass , centre of mass at distance from on its axis, and moment about the axis, spinning fast with rate . For a fast top in steady motion the precession rate is approximately .
Non-example: a body spinning about a fixed axis has constant , so it does not precess.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
