Proof

We argue by induction on n≥1n \ge 1. For each nn, the claim is the inequality for all x1,…,xn∈Ix_1, \dots, x_n \in I and all weights wi≥0w_i \ge 0 with sum 11.

  1. First, a weighted average stays in II. Let y=∑i=1mvixiy = \sum_{i=1}^{m} v_i x_i with xi∈Ix_i \in I, vi≥0v_i \ge 0 and ∑ivi=1\sum_i v_i = 1.
  2. Let p=min⁡ixip = \min_i x_i and q=max⁡ixiq = \max_i x_i. Then p=∑ivip≤y≤∑iviq=qp = \sum_i v_i p \le y \le \sum_i v_i q = q.
  3. Both pp and qq lie in II, and II is an interval. So y∈Iy \in I. In particular, both sides of the inequality are defined.
  4. Base case n=1n = 1. Then w1=1w_1 = 1, and both sides equal f(x1)f(x_1).
  5. Induction step. Let n≥2n \ge 2 and assume the claim for n−1n - 1 points. Let x1,…,xnx_1, \dots, x_n and w1,…,wnw_1, \dots, w_n be as in the statement.
  6. If wn=1w_n = 1, then wi=0w_i = 0 for i<ni < n, since the weights are nonnegative with sum 11. Both sides equal f(xn)f(x_n).
  7. Otherwise wn<1w_n < 1. Put s=1−wn=w1+⋯+wn−1>0s = 1 - w_n = w_1 + \cdots + w_{n-1} > 0, and y=∑i=1n−1wisxiy = \sum_{i=1}^{n-1} \frac{w_i}{s} x_i.
  8. The weights wi/sw_i / s for i<ni < n are nonnegative with sum 11. So y∈Iy \in I by step 3.
  9. We have ∑i=1nwixi=sy+wnxn\sum_{i=1}^{n} w_i x_i = s y + w_n x_n, with s+wn=1s + w_n = 1 and s∈(0,1]s \in (0, 1].
  10. By the definition of a convex function with t=st = s, f(sy+wnxn)≤sf(y)+wnf(xn)f(s y + w_n x_n) \le s f(y) + w_n f(x_n).
  11. By the induction hypothesis for the n−1n - 1 points x1,…,xn−1x_1, \dots, x_{n-1}, f(y)≤∑i=1n−1wisf(xi)f(y) \le \sum_{i=1}^{n-1} \frac{w_i}{s} f(x_i).
  12. Multiplying by s>0s > 0 and using step 10 gives f(∑i=1nwixi)≤∑i=1n−1wif(xi)+wnf(xn)=∑i=1nwif(xi)f\big(\sum_{i=1}^{n} w_i x_i\big) \le \sum_{i=1}^{n-1} w_i f(x_i) + w_n f(x_n) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} w_i f(x_i).
  13. By induction, the inequality holds for every n≥1n \ge 1.

Idea

A weighted average of nn points is a two-point average of xnx_n and the average yy of the other points. Convexity handles the two-point split, and the induction hypothesis handles yy. The renormalized weights wi/sw_i / s are what make the inner average a genuine average.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
