Definition

Let (Ω,ℱ,P)(\Omega, \mathcal{F}, P) be a probability space, let T⊆[0,∞)T \subseteq [0, \infty) be an index set, and let (ℱt)t∈T(\mathcal{F}_t)_{t \in T} be a filtration. A submartingale with respect to (ℱt)(\mathcal{F}_t) is a family (Xt)t∈T(X_t)_{t \in T} of real random variables such that:

  1. (Xt)(X_t) is adapted: XtX_t is ℱt\mathcal{F}_t-measurable for each t∈Tt \in T.
  2. E[∣Xt∣]<∞E[\abs{X_t}] < \infty for each t∈Tt \in T.
  3. E[Xt∣ℱs]≥XsE[X_t \mid \mathcal{F}_s] \ge X_s almost surely for all s≤ts \le t in TT, where E[⋅∣ℱs]E[\cdot \mid \mathcal{F}_s] is the conditional expectation.

Remarks

Let Sn=ξ1+⋯+ξnS_n = \xi_1 + \dots + \xi_n, where the ξi\xi_i are independent with P(ξi=1)=P(ξi=−1)=1/2P(\xi_i = 1) = P(\xi_i = -1) = 1/2, and let ℱn=σ(ξ1,…,ξn)\mathcal{F}_n = \sigma(\xi_1, \dots, \xi_n). Then Xn=Sn2X_n = S_n^2 is a submartingale: it is adapted, ∣Xn∣≤n2\abs{X_n} \le n^2, and E[Sn+12∣ℱn]=Sn2+2SnE[ξn+1]+E[ξn+12]=Sn2+1≥Sn2E[S_{n+1}^2 \mid \mathcal{F}_n] = S_n^2 + 2 S_n E[\xi_{n+1}] + E[\xi_{n+1}^2] = S_n^2 + 1 \ge S_n^2. The process −Sn2-S_n^2 is adapted and integrable but fails clause 3, since E[−Sn+12∣ℱn]=−Sn2−1E[-S_{n+1}^2 \mid \mathcal{F}_n] = -S_n^2 - 1. In discrete time T={0,1,2,… }T = \{0, 1, 2, \dots\}, clause 3 is equivalent to E[Xn+1∣ℱn]≥XnE[X_{n+1} \mid \mathcal{F}_n] \ge X_n for each nn, by the tower property. A process is a martingale if and only if it is both a submartingale and a supermartingale. If (Mt)(M_t) is a martingale and φ\varphi is convex with E[∣φ(Mt)∣]<∞E[\abs{\varphi(M_t)}] < \infty for all tt, then (φ(Mt))(\varphi(M_t)) is a submartingale by the conditional form of Jensen's inequality. Taking expectations in clause 3 shows that t↦E[Xt]t \mapsto E[X_t] is non-decreasing.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
