Definition

Let (Ω,ℱ,P)(\Omega, \mathcal{F}, P) be a probability space, let T⊆[0,∞)T \subseteq [0, \infty) be an index set, and let (ℱt)t∈T(\mathcal{F}_t)_{t \in T} be a filtration. A supermartingale with respect to (ℱt)(\mathcal{F}_t) is a family (Xt)t∈T(X_t)_{t \in T} of real random variables such that:

  1. (Xt)(X_t) is adapted: XtX_t is ℱt\mathcal{F}_t-measurable for each t∈Tt \in T.
  2. E[∣Xt∣]<∞E[\abs{X_t}] < \infty for each t∈Tt \in T.
  3. E[Xt∣ℱs]≤XsE[X_t \mid \mathcal{F}_s] \le X_s almost surely for all s≤ts \le t in TT, where E[⋅∣ℱs]E[\cdot \mid \mathcal{F}_s] is the conditional expectation.

Remarks

Let ξ1,ξ2,…\xi_1, \xi_2, \dots be independent with P(ξi=1)=pP(\xi_i = 1) = p and P(ξi=−1)=1−pP(\xi_i = -1) = 1 - p, where p≤1/2p \le 1/2, and let ℱn=σ(ξ1,…,ξn)\mathcal{F}_n = \sigma(\xi_1, \dots, \xi_n). Then Sn=ξ1+⋯+ξnS_n = \xi_1 + \dots + \xi_n is a supermartingale: it is adapted, ∣Sn∣≤n\abs{S_n} \le n, and E[Sn+1∣ℱn]=Sn+(2p−1)≤SnE[S_{n+1} \mid \mathcal{F}_n] = S_n + (2p - 1) \le S_n. For p=1/2p = 1/2, the process Sn2S_n^2 is adapted and integrable but fails clause 3, since E[Sn+12∣ℱn]=Sn2+1E[S_{n+1}^2 \mid \mathcal{F}_n] = S_n^2 + 1. (Xt)(X_t) is a supermartingale if and only if (−Xt)(-X_t) is a submartingale. A process is a martingale if and only if it is both a submartingale and a supermartingale. Taking expectations in clause 3 shows that t↦E[Xt]t \mapsto E[X_t] is non-increasing.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
