Probability theory and stochastic processes Proof
Proof of the formula for the variance as the mean of the square minus the square of the mean
Proof
We expand the square and use linearity of expectation.
- Let be a real random variable with .
- For each real , , so .
- Hence . The integral of nonnegative functions is monotone, so the expected value is at most .
- So is integrable. Let , a real number. The variance of is .
- Pointwise, .
- The variables , and the constant are integrable. By linearity of expectation, .
- Since , the right side is .
- So .
Idea
Square out and take the expectation of each term. The cross term gives , which cancels the constant down to .
