Proof of the parallelogram law

Builds on Inner product spaceInner productNorm induced by an inner product

Proof

Let 𝕂\mathbb{K} be the scalar field, ℝ\R or ℂ\C. Write aˉ\bar a for the conjugate of a∈𝕂a \in \mathbb{K}, so aˉ=a\bar a = a over ℝ\R.

  1. By axioms 1 and 2 of the inner product, for u,v,w∈Vu, v, w \in V we get ⟨w,u+v⟩=⟨u,w⟩+⟨v,w⟩‾\langle w, u + v \rangle = \overline{\langle u, w \rangle + \langle v, w \rangle}. This equals ⟨w,u⟩+⟨w,v⟩\langle w, u \rangle + \langle w, v \rangle.
  2. Likewise ⟨w,−v⟩=−⟨v,w⟩‾=−⟨w,v⟩\langle w, -v \rangle = \overline{-\langle v, w \rangle} = -\langle w, v \rangle.
  3. By the induced norm, axiom 1 and step 1, ∥x+y∥2=⟨x+y,x+y⟩\norm{x + y}^2 = \langle x + y, x + y \rangle. This equals ⟨x,x⟩+⟨x,y⟩+⟨y,x⟩+⟨y,y⟩\langle x, x \rangle + \langle x, y \rangle + \langle y, x \rangle + \langle y, y \rangle.
  4. By axiom 1 and steps 1 and 2, ∥x−y∥2=⟨x,x⟩−⟨x,y⟩−⟨y,x⟩+⟨y,y⟩\norm{x - y}^2 = \langle x, x \rangle - \langle x, y \rangle - \langle y, x \rangle + \langle y, y \rangle.
  5. Adding steps 3 and 4, the mixed terms cancel. So ∥x+y∥2+∥x−y∥2=2⟨x,x⟩+2⟨y,y⟩=2∥x∥2+2∥y∥2\norm{x + y}^2 + \norm{x - y}^2 = 2 \langle x, x \rangle + 2 \langle y, y \rangle = 2 \norm{x}^2 + 2 \norm{y}^2.

Idea

Expand both squared norms as inner products. The mixed terms ⟨x,y⟩+⟨y,x⟩\langle x, y \rangle + \langle y, x \rangle appear with a plus sign in one and a minus sign in the other. So they cancel in the sum.

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 4 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Show the path as a graph
Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
