Definition
Let be a complex Hilbert space whose inner product is conjugate-linear in the first argument and linear in the second. Bra–ket notation consists of the following conventions.
- A ket is a vector .
- A bra , for , is the continuous linear functional , an element of the continuous dual of .
- The bracket is the value of at , that is, .
- For an operator on and in its domain, .
- The ket-bra is the operator on .
Remarks
By the Riesz representation theorem, every continuous linear functional on is a bra for exactly one . The map is conjugate-linear.
For an orthonormal basis , the expansion reads , with convergence of the sum applied to each vector.
Example: in , let and . Then , and is the orthogonal projection onto the first axis.
Non-example: physicists write for a "position eigenstate" with . It is not a ket in the sense of clause 1: no vector of gives the functional , which is not even defined on all of . Such symbols are made precise as distributions, for example in a rigged Hilbert space.
