Statement

Let 𝕂\mathbb{K} be ℝ\R or ℂ\C, and let HH be a Hilbert space over 𝕂\mathbb{K} whose inner product ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\ip{\cdot}{\cdot} is linear in the first argument. Let φ ⁣:H→𝕂\varphi \colon H \to \mathbb{K} be a continuous linear form. Then there is exactly one vector y∈Hy \in H such that φ(x)=⟨x,y⟩\varphi(x) = \ip{x}{y} for all x∈Hx \in H. Moreover ∥φ∥=∥y∥\norm{\varphi} = \norm{y}, where ∥φ∥\norm{\varphi} is the operator norm of φ\varphi. Hence the map that sends φ\varphi to yy is a bijective, conjugate-linear isometry from the continuous dual H′H' onto HH.

Remarks

If φ=0\varphi = 0, take y=0y = 0. Otherwise the kernel N=ker⁡φN = \ker \varphi is a closed subspace different from HH. By the Hilbert projection theorem, its orthogonal complement N⊥N^\perp contains a vector z≠0z \neq 0, and N⊥N^\perp has dimension 11. Then y=φ(z)‾ z/∥z∥2y = \overline{\varphi(z)}\, z / \norm{z}^2 works, and uniqueness follows because ⟨x,y−y′⟩=0\ip{x}{y - y'} = 0 for all xx forces y=y′y = y'.

Example: on L2([0,1])L^2([0,1]) the form φ(f)=∫01f(t) dt\varphi(f) = \int_0^1 f(t)\, dt is represented by the constant function y=1y = 1, and ∥φ∥=1\norm{\varphi} = 1.

Completeness is necessary. Let c00c_{00} be the space of finitely supported sequences with the inner product of ℓ2\ell^2. The form φ(x)=∑nxn/n\varphi(x) = \sum_n x_n / n is continuous on c00c_{00} by the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality. The only candidate is y=(1/n)ny = (1/n)_n, which is not finitely supported, so no y∈c00y \in c_{00} represents φ\varphi.

In finite dimension the result reduces to the Riesz representation theorem in finite dimensions.

For a student

The theorem identifies a Hilbert space with its dual, up to complex conjugation. It gives the adjoint of a bounded operator: ⟨Tx,y⟩=⟨x,T∗y⟩\ip{Tx}{y} = \ip{x}{T^*y} defines T∗yT^*y because x↦⟨Tx,y⟩x \mapsto \ip{Tx}{y} is a continuous linear form. It also shows that every Hilbert space is reflexive. The Lax–Milgram theorem, used for weak solutions of elliptic equations, extends it to bounded coercive bilinear forms.
