Definition

Let HH and KK be Hilbert spaces over ℂ\C, with inner products ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\ip{\cdot}{\cdot} linear in the first argument. Let T ⁣:H→KT \colon H \to K be a continuous linear map. The adjoint of TT is the unique map T∗ ⁣:K→HT^* \colon K \to H such that ⟨Tx,y⟩K=⟨x,T∗y⟩Hfor all x∈H and y∈K.\ip{Tx}{y}_K = \ip{x}{T^* y}_H \qquad \text{for all } x \in H \text{ and } y \in K.

Remarks

For fixed yy, the map x↦⟨Tx,y⟩x \mapsto \ip{Tx}{y} is a bounded linear functional on HH, so the Riesz representation theorem gives a unique vector T∗yT^* y representing it. The map T∗T^* is linear and bounded, with operator norm ∥T∗∥=∥T∥\norm{T^*} = \norm{T} and ∥T∗T∥=∥T∥2\norm{T^* T} = \norm{T}^2. It satisfies (S+T)∗=S∗+T∗(S + T)^* = S^* + T^*, (aT)∗=aˉT∗(aT)^* = \bar a T^*, (ST)∗=T∗S∗(ST)^* = T^* S^* and T∗∗=TT^{**} = T. For finite-dimensional spaces it is the adjoint of a linear map.

Example: let S(x1,x2,…)=(0,x1,x2,…)S(x_1, x_2, \ldots) = (0, x_1, x_2, \ldots) be the right shift on ℓ2\ell^2, and L(y1,y2,…)=(y2,y3,…)L(y_1, y_2, \ldots) = (y_2, y_3, \ldots) the left shift. Then ⟨Sx,y⟩=∑n≥2xn−1yn‾=∑m≥1xmym+1‾=⟨x,Ly⟩\ip{Sx}{y} = \sum_{n \ge 2} x_{n-1} \overline{y_n} = \sum_{m \ge 1} x_m \overline{y_{m+1}} = \ip{x}{Ly}, so S∗=LS^* = L.

Non-example: SS itself does not satisfy the defining identity in place of S∗S^*. With unit vectors ene_n, ⟨Se1,e2⟩=⟨e2,e2⟩=1\ip{S e_1}{e_2} = \ip{e_2}{e_2} = 1, while ⟨e1,Se2⟩=⟨e1,e3⟩=0\ip{e_1}{S e_2} = \ip{e_1}{e_3} = 0. So S∗≠SS^* \ne S, and SS is not self-adjoint.

Over ℝ\R, the same definition applies, and then (aT)∗=aT∗(aT)^* = a T^*.
