Proof of von Dyck's theorem

Builds on Presentation of a groupUniversal property of the free groupUniversal property of the quotient groupKernel of a homomorphismThe kernel is a normal subgroupGroup homomorphism

Proof

  1. By the definition of a presentation, G=FS/NG = F_S/N, where NN is the smallest normal subgroup of FSF_S that contains RR. Let π ⁣:FS→G\pi \colon F_S \to G be the projection π(w)=wN\pi(w) = wN.
  2. The homomorphism φ\varphi exists and is unique, by the universal property of the free group.
  3. By hypothesis, φ(r)=e\varphi(r) = e for each r∈Rr \in R. So R⊆ker⁡φR \subseteq \ker \varphi, the kernel of φ\varphi.
  4. Since the kernel is a normal subgroup, ker⁡φ\ker \varphi is a normal subgroup of FSF_S that contains RR. Since NN is the smallest one, N⊆ker⁡φN \subseteq \ker \varphi.
  5. By the universal property of the quotient group, there is a group homomorphism ψ ⁣:G→H\psi \colon G \to H with ψ(wN)=φ(w)\psi(wN) = \varphi(w) for each w∈FSw \in F_S.
  6. In particular, ψ(sN)=φ(s)=f(s)\psi(sN) = \varphi(s) = f(s) for each s∈Ss \in S. This proves existence.
  7. For uniqueness, let ψ′ ⁣:G→H\psi' \colon G \to H be a homomorphism with ψ′(sN)=f(s)\psi'(sN) = f(s) for each s∈Ss \in S.
  8. Then ψ′∘π ⁣:FS→H\psi' \circ \pi \colon F_S \to H is a homomorphism with (ψ′∘π)(s)=f(s)(\psi' \circ \pi)(s) = f(s) for each s∈Ss \in S.
  9. By the uniqueness part of the universal property of the free group, ψ′∘π=φ\psi' \circ \pi = \varphi.
  10. So ψ′(wN)=φ(w)=ψ(wN)\psi'(wN) = \varphi(w) = \psi(wN) for each w∈FSw \in F_S. Every element of GG has the form wNwN, so ψ′=ψ\psi' = \psi.

Idea

The homomorphism φ\varphi kills every relator, so it kills the normal subgroup they generate. Hence φ\varphi factors through the quotient FS/N=GF_S/N = G. Uniqueness follows from uniqueness for free groups. Two homomorphisms that agree on the cosets sNsN give the same map on FSF_S, so they agree on GG.
