Proof

We use the slope inequalities to bound chord slopes from a fixed point, which gives a local Lipschitz bound.

  1. Fix y∈Iy \in I. Since II is open, there are x,z∈Ix, z \in I with x<y<zx < y < z.
  2. For w∈Iw \in I with w≠yw \ne y, let σ(w)=f(w)−f(y)w−y\sigma(w) = \dfrac{f(w) - f(y)}{w - y}. Note that σ(w)\sigma(w) is also f(y)−f(w)y−w\dfrac{f(y) - f(w)}{y - w}.
  3. Let s−=f(y)−f(x)y−xs_- = \dfrac{f(y) - f(x)}{y - x} and s+=f(z)−f(y)z−ys_+ = \dfrac{f(z) - f(y)}{z - y}.
  4. Let y<w<zy < w < z. The slope inequalities for x<y<wx < y < w, first against last quotient, give s−≤σ(w)s_- \le \sigma(w).
  5. The slope inequalities for y<w<zy < w < z, first against middle quotient, give σ(w)≤s+\sigma(w) \le s_+.
  6. Let x<w<yx < w < y. The slope inequalities for x<w<yx < w < y, middle against last quotient, give s−≤σ(w)s_- \le \sigma(w).
  7. The slope inequalities for w<y<zw < y < z, first against last quotient, give σ(w)≤s+\sigma(w) \le s_+.
  8. So s−≤σ(w)≤s+s_- \le \sigma(w) \le s_+ for all w∈(x,z)w \in (x, z) with w≠yw \ne y. Let C=∣s−∣+∣s+∣C = \abs{s_-} + \abs{s_+}. Then ∣σ(w)∣≤C\abs{\sigma(w)} \le C.
  9. Hence ∣f(w)−f(y)∣≤C∣w−y∣\abs{f(w) - f(y)} \le C \abs{w - y} for all w∈(x,z)w \in (x, z). For w=yw = y this is trivial.
  10. Let VV be an open interval containing f(y)f(y). Choose ε>0\varepsilon > 0 with (f(y)−ε,f(y)+ε)⊆V(f(y) - \varepsilon, f(y) + \varepsilon) \subseteq V.
  11. Let δ=min⁡{y−x, z−y, ε/(C+1)}\delta = \min\set{y - x, \, z - y, \, \varepsilon/(C + 1)} and U=(y−δ,y+δ)U = (y - \delta, y + \delta). Then U⊆(x,z)U \subseteq (x, z).
  12. For w∈Uw \in U, step 9 gives ∣f(w)−f(y)∣≤Cδ≤Cε/(C+1)<ε\abs{f(w) - f(y)} \le C \delta \le C \varepsilon/(C + 1) < \varepsilon. So f(w)∈Vf(w) \in V.
  13. Thus ff is continuous at yy. Since y∈Iy \in I was arbitrary, ff is continuous on II.

Idea

Near an interior point yy, every chord slope from yy is squeezed between two fixed slopes. They are the slopes from a point on the left and to a point on the right. Bounded slopes mean f(w)f(w) is within a constant times ∣w−y∣\abs{w - y} of f(y)f(y). Openness of II is what gives room on both sides of yy.
