Definition
Let and be finite-dimensional complex Hilbert spaces. Let be a density operator on the tensor product . Let and be its partial traces. The quantum mutual information of is where is the von Neumann entropy.
Remarks
Example: let with , a Bell state. The state is pure, so . Each marginal is , so . Hence .
Non-example of correlation: for a product state , the entropy is additive, , so .
An equivalent form uses the quantum relative entropy: . By Klein's inequality this gives , with equality exactly for product states. It also satisfies , where and are the dimensions. With to base , the unit is the bit.
