Quaternionic analysis
Builds on The quaternionsDivision ringPartial derivativeLaplacian
Definition
Let be the quaternions, the real division ring with basis and . Write with , and identify with . Let be open. A function with continuous first partial derivatives is left regular, or Fueter regular, if Quaternionic analysis is the study of functions by analogy with complex analysis, and above all of regular functions.
Remarks
Example: is left regular, since and the other two derivatives vanish.
Non-example: is not left regular. The sum is . So, unlike in complex analysis, the identity function and polynomials in are in general not regular.
Write and . Then is the Laplacian of , so each component of a regular function of class is harmonic. Right regular functions are defined with the units multiplied on the right of the derivatives.
