Statement

Let (an)(a_n) be a sequence of positive real numbers, and put Rn=n(anan+1−1).R_n = n \left( \frac{a_n}{a_{n+1}} - 1 \right).

  1. If there are r>1r > 1 and NN with Rn≥rR_n \ge r for all n≥Nn \ge N, then ∑an\sum a_n converges.
  2. If there is NN with Rn≤1R_n \le 1 for all n≥Nn \ge N, then ∑an\sum a_n diverges.

In particular, if Rn→RR_n \to R, the series converges when R>1R > 1 and diverges when R<1R < 1.

Remarks

This is Kummer's test with cn=nc_n = n. Then ρn=nan/an+1−(n+1)=Rn−1\rho_n = n a_n / a_{n+1} - (n + 1) = R_n - 1, and ∑1/n\sum 1/n diverges. For R=1R = 1 the limit form gives no answer, and Bertrand's test can then help. Example: let a1=1/2a_1 = 1/2 and an+1=an(2n+1)/(2n+2)a_{n+1} = a_n (2n+1)/(2n+2), so an=1⋅3⋯(2n−1)2⋅4⋯(2n)a_n = \frac{1 \cdot 3 \cdots (2n-1)}{2 \cdot 4 \cdots (2n)}. The ratio test fails, since an+1/an→1a_{n+1}/a_n \to 1. Here Rn=n/(2n+1)≤1R_n = n/(2n+1) \le 1, so ∑an\sum a_n diverges. For an=1/npa_n = 1/n^p one gets Rn→pR_n \to p, which recovers the p-series test for p≠1p \ne 1.

Going deeper

For a student

The ratio test compares a series with a geometric series. Raabe's test compares it with the pp-series ∑1/np\sum 1/n^p instead, through Kummer's test with weights cn=nc_n = n. It settles many series whose terms are quotients of products, such as binomial and hypergeometric coefficients. Gauss's test is a convenient form when an/an+1a_n / a_{n+1} has an expansion in powers of 1/n1/n.
