Builds on Convergent seriesDivergent seriesNatural logarithmKummer's test
Statement
Let be a sequence of positive real numbers, and put where is the natural logarithm.
In particular, if , the series converges when and diverges when .
Remarks
This is Kummer's test with . A short computation gives . The inequality gives , and this quantity tends to . So gives for large , and gives ; moreover diverges. Example: if with , then , so the series diverges. This is the case that Raabe's test leaves open in Gauss's test. For one finds , so the test decides these series for .

For a student
The ratio test, Raabe's test and Bertrand's test form a scale of finer and finer tests, all special cases of Kummer's test. Each one looks at the next term in the expansion of . One use of Bertrand's test is the proof of Gauss's test in the boundary case .
