Statement
Let be a sequence of positive real numbers. Assume that there are a real number , a real number and a bounded real sequence with for all . Then converges if , and diverges if .
Remarks
The quantity of Raabe's test is , which tends to . So Raabe's test settles the cases and . For , the quantity of Bertrand's test is , which tends to , so the series diverges. Example: let and let be the -th term of the hypergeometric series , where . Then . So the series converges exactly when .
Going deeper
For a student
Gauss's test packages Raabe's test and Bertrand's test into one statement for ratios with an asymptotic expansion. A classical application is the convergence of the hypergeometric series at , as in the example above. The error term must be with ; an error like would hide the boundary case.
