Probability theory and stochastic processes Brownian motion Theorem
Reflection principle
Statement
Let be a Wiener process, let , and let be the first hitting time of , a stopping time.
- The process defined by for and for is again a Wiener process.
- For every ,
Remarks
Part 1 follows from the strong Markov property: after , the process is a Wiener process independent of the past, and so is its negative. For part 2, the event equals , and it splits into and . By part 1 the second event has the same probability as , and . As a consequence, has the same law as , and , where is the standard normal distribution function. Differentiating gives the density of , which shows almost surely but .

For a student
The principle gives the joint law of and its running maximum, and the law of first passage times. These are used to price barrier options and to study boundary crossing in sequential statistics. The same reflection idea for simple random walks gives the ballot theorem and counts of lattice paths.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
