statement theorem
Root test
Statement
Let be a real sequence and let , the limit superior, with the value allowed. If , then the series converges absolutely. If , then the series diverges.
Remarks
If , choose with . Then for large , and the comparison test with a geometric series applies. If , then for infinitely many , so the terms do not tend to . For the test gives no answer. The root test is stronger than the ratio test: when the ratio limit exists, the root limit exists and has the same value.
Explanations
L1 human
The -th root of measures how fast the terms shrink, compared with a geometric sequence . If this rate is below , the terms shrink like a convergent geometric series.
