Self-similar process

Builds on Stochastic processFinite-dimensional distributions

Definition

Let (Xt)t≥0(X_t)_{t \ge 0} be a real-valued stochastic process and let H>0H > 0. The process is self-similar with Hurst index HH if for every a>0a > 0 the processes (Xat)t≥0(X_{at})_{t \ge 0} and (aHXt)t≥0(a^H X_t)_{t \ge 0} have the same finite-dimensional distributions. That is, for all n≥1n \ge 1 and t1,…,tn≥0t_1, \dots, t_n \ge 0, the vectors (Xat1,…,Xatn)(X_{a t_1}, \dots, X_{a t_n}) and (aHXt1,…,aHXtn)(a^H X_{t_1}, \dots, a^H X_{t_n}) have the same law.

Remarks

The Wiener process WW is self-similar with H=1/2H = 1/2. Check: (Wat)t≥0(W_{at})_{t \ge 0} and (a Wt)t≥0(\sqrt{a}\, W_t)_{t \ge 0} are both centred Gaussian processes with covariance amin⁡(s,t)a \min(s, t), so they have the same finite-dimensional distributions. Brownian motion with drift, Xt=Wt+tX_t = W_t + t, is not self-similar for any HH. Indeed E[Xat]=atE[X_{at}] = at and E[aHXt]=aHtE[a^H X_t] = a^H t force H=1H = 1, while Var⁡(Xat)=at\operatorname{Var}(X_{at}) = at and Var⁡(aHXt)=a2Ht\operatorname{Var}(a^H X_t) = a^{2H} t force H=1/2H = 1/2. One often writes Xat=daHXtX_{at} \overset{d}{=} a^H X_t, where equality in law is meant for the whole process. Taking t=0t = 0 gives X0=daHX0X_0 \overset{d}{=} a^H X_0 for all a>0a > 0, which forces X0=0X_0 = 0 almost surely.
