Definition
Let , and let be either or . Consider the heat equation for . A similarity solution of it is a solution of the form for a real number and a twice differentiable function on . These are the similarity solutions with exponents in the general sense.
Remarks
Substituting the form gives and . So solves the heat equation exactly when . Example with : the equation gives , hence with the error function. The choice , gives , the temperature of the half-space initially at with surface held at . Example with : the equation is , solved by , which gives . With this is the heat kernel for diffusivity . Non-example: solves the heat equation on but is not a similarity solution. At each time its zeros are the points of , while a similarity solution has zero set for a fixed set , which changes with unless . Similarity solutions arise for problems whose initial and boundary data are compatible with the scaling , , such as constant data on a half-line or a point source.
