Definition

Let TT be one of ℤ\Z, ℕ\N, ℝ\R or [0,∞)[0, \infty), so that t+h∈Tt + h \in T whenever t,h∈Tt, h \in T. Let X=(Xt)t∈TX = (X_t)_{t \in T} be a stochastic process with values in a measurable space SS. The process XX is stationary, or strictly stationary, if for every k≥1k \ge 1, all t1,…,tk∈Tt_1, \dots, t_k \in T and every h∈Th \in T, the random vectors (Xt1+h,…,Xtk+h)and(Xt1,…,Xtk)(X_{t_1 + h}, \dots, X_{t_k + h}) \quad \text{and} \quad (X_{t_1}, \dots, X_{t_k}) have the same law.

Remarks

Equivalently, all finite-dimensional distributions of XX are invariant under the time shift by hh, for every h∈Th \in T.

A real process with E[Xt2]<∞E[X_t^2] < \infty for all tt is weakly stationary, or wide-sense stationary, if E[Xt]=mE[X_t] = m does not depend on tt and the covariance Cov⁡(Xt+h,Xt)=r(h)\operatorname{Cov}(X_{t+h}, X_t) = r(h) depends only on hh. A strictly stationary process with finite second moments is weakly stationary. For Gaussian processes the two notions agree.

Example: an i.i.d. sequence (Xn)n∈ℤ(X_n)_{n \in \Z} is stationary, since the law of (Xt1+h,…,Xtk+h)(X_{t_1 + h}, \dots, X_{t_k + h}) is the product of kk copies of the common law, for distinct times, whatever hh is.

Non-example: a simple symmetric random walk SnS_n with S0=0S_0 = 0 is not stationary. Already for k=1k = 1, the law of S0S_0 is the point mass at 00, while S1S_1 takes the values ±1\pm 1.
