Stiff equation
Builds on Ordinary differential equationEuler methodEigenvalueJacobian matrix
Definition
Stiffness is not a single precise condition; the definition below is the standard working one. Let be an interval and consider an ordinary differential equation with continuously differentiable, on . The equation is stiff on if explicit methods such as the Euler method need much smaller steps than accuracy requires. The reason is that larger steps make the numerical solution unstable. Consider a linear system with a constant matrix . Assume its eigenvalues all have . A common measure is then the stiffness ratio and the system is called stiff when this ratio is large.
Remarks
Example: . On the test equation , the Euler method gives , which stays bounded only if . For this forces , although after a short time every solution is close to the smooth particular solution , which is nearly . The implicit Euler method is stable for all when . Non-example: is not stiff, since its stability bound is far larger than the steps needed for accuracy. For nonlinear equations one uses the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix along the solution.
