Sylvester's determinant identity

Builds on DeterminantMinorCommutative ringDeterminant via the Schur complement

Statement

Let KK be a commutative ring, let 1≤k<n1 \le k < n, and let A=(aij)A = (a_{ij}) be an n×nn \times n matrix over KK. Let A0A_0 be the k×kk \times k submatrix of AA formed by its first kk rows and its first kk columns. For k<i,j≤nk < i, j \le n, let bijb_{ij} be the minor of AA with rows 1,…,k,i1, \dots, k, i and columns 1,…,k,j1, \dots, k, j. Let BB be the (n−k)×(n−k)(n-k) \times (n-k) matrix (bij)k<i,j≤n(b_{ij})_{k < i, j \le n}. Then det⁡B=(det⁡A0)n−k−1det⁡A,\det B = (\det A_0)^{n-k-1} \det A, where det⁡\det is the determinant.

Remarks

First assume that A0A_0 is invertible, and write AA in blocks with A0A_0 in the top left corner. By the Schur complement formula, det⁡A=det⁡A0⋅det⁡S\det A = \det A_0 \cdot \det S, where S=(sij)S = (s_{ij}) is the Schur complement of A0A_0 in AA. The same formula on each bordered submatrix gives bij=det⁡A0⋅sijb_{ij} = \det A_0 \cdot s_{ij}, so B=(det⁡A0)SB = (\det A_0) S and the identity follows. Both sides are polynomials in the entries of AA with integer coefficients, so the identity holds over every commutative ring.

For k=n−1k = n - 1, the matrix BB is 1×11 \times 1 with entry det⁡A\det A, and the identity is trivial. For k=n−2k = n - 2, it is a form of the Desnanot–Jacobi identity, which is the basis of Dodgson condensation. It should not be confused with Sylvester's determinant theorem, which says det⁡(Im+AB)=det⁡(In+BA)\det(I_m + AB) = \det(I_n + BA).

Going deeper

For a student

The identity explains why fraction-free Gaussian elimination works over the integers. The intermediate entries of the Bareiss algorithm are such bordered minors, and the division by the previous pivot is exact. It sits next to the determinant via the Schur complement and to the determinant of a block triangular matrix.
