Toeplitz operator
Definition
Let be the unit circle with normalised Lebesgue measure, and let (Lp space). Let be the Hardy space, the closed subspace of functions whose Fourier coefficients of negative index vanish. Let be the orthogonal projection. For , the Toeplitz operator with symbol is the operator given by
Remarks
is a bounded linear operator, and in fact . With respect to the orthonormal basis , , its matrix entries are , so the matrix is a Toeplitz matrix. If is continuous and has no zeros on , then is a Fredholm operator whose index is minus the winding number of around .
Example: . For the product has no negative Fourier coefficients, so and is the shift operator .
Non-example: for , plain multiplication by does not map into itself, since it sends to . So the projection in the definition cannot be omitted; the Toeplitz operator is the backward shift.
