Topological field
Definition
Let be a field with a topology. Give the product topology and the subspace topology. The field is a topological field if the following maps are continuous:
- addition , ;
- negation , ;
- multiplication , ;
- inversion , .
Remarks
Clauses 1 to 3 say that is a topological ring. Many authors also require the topology to be Hausdorff and not discrete. Example: with the usual topology is a topological field. Clauses 1 to 3 are the limit rules for sums, negatives and products, and clause 4 holds because is continuous on . More generally, every field with an absolute value, with the topology of the metric , is a topological field. Non-example: with the lower limit topology, generated by the intervals , is not a topological field. Negation fails clause 2: the preimage of the open set under is , which is not open. Every field is a topological field for the discrete topology and for the indiscrete topology.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
