Definition

Let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be open, with n=2n = 2 or n=3n = 3, and let 𝐮 ⁣:Ω→ℝn\mathbf{u} \colon \Omega \to \R^n be a continuous velocity field. A velocity potential for 𝐮\mathbf{u} is a continuously differentiable function ϕ ⁣:Ω→ℝ\phi \colon \Omega \to \R such that 𝐮=∇ϕon Ω.\mathbf{u} = \nabla \phi \quad \text{on } \Omega. If the flow depends on time, the equation holds at each fixed time.

Remarks

A field with a velocity potential is a conservative vector field. If 𝐮\mathbf{u} is continuously differentiable and has a potential, then its vorticity ∇×𝐮\nabla \times \mathbf{u} is zero. Conversely, on a simply connected domain every continuously differentiable irrotational field has a potential, unique up to an additive constant. If moreover the flow is incompressible, then Δϕ=∇⋅𝐮=0\Delta \phi = \nabla \cdot \mathbf{u} = 0, so ϕ\phi solves Laplace's equation. Example: ϕ=(x2−y2)/2\phi = (x^2 - y^2)/2 is a potential for 𝐮=(x,−y)\mathbf{u} = (x, -y); check: ϕx=x\phi_x = x and ϕy=−y\phi_y = -y. Non-example: the rigid rotation 𝐮=(−y,x)\mathbf{u} = (-y, x) has vorticity 2≠02 \ne 0, so it has no potential. The point vortex 𝐮=(−y,x)/(x2+y2)\mathbf{u} = (-y, x)/(x^2 + y^2) is irrotational on ℝ2∖{0}\R^2 \setminus \set{0} but has no single-valued potential there, since its circulation around the origin is 2π2\pi; the domain is not simply connected.
