Definition

Let π’ž\mathcal{C} be a Waldhausen category with zero object 00. For nβ‰₯0n \ge 0, let Ar⁑[n]\operatorname{Ar}[n] be the poset of pairs (i,j)(i, j) of integers with 0≀i≀j≀n0 \le i \le j \le n, ordered by (i,j)≀(iβ€²,jβ€²)(i, j) \le (i', j') when i≀iβ€²i \le i' and j≀jβ€²j \le j'. The category Snπ’žS_n \mathcal{C} has as objects the functors A ⁣:Ar⁑[n]β†’π’žA \colon \operatorname{Ar}[n] \to \mathcal{C}, (i,j)↦Ai,j(i, j) \mapsto A_{i,j}, such that:

  1. Ai,i=0A_{i,i} = 0 for 0≀i≀n0 \le i \le n.
  2. For 0≀i≀j≀k≀n0 \le i \le j \le k \le n, the map Ai,jβ†’Ai,kA_{i,j} \to A_{i,k} is a cofibration, and the square formed by Ai,jβ†’Ai,kA_{i,j} \to A_{i,k}, Ai,jβ†’Aj,j=0A_{i,j} \to A_{j,j} = 0, Ai,kβ†’Aj,kA_{i,k} \to A_{j,k} and 0β†’Aj,k0 \to A_{j,k} is a pushout.

The morphisms of Snπ’žS_n \mathcal{C} are the natural transformations. A morphism is a weak equivalence when each of its components is a weak equivalence of π’ž\mathcal{C}; these form the subcategory wSnπ’žwS_n \mathcal{C}. An order-preserving map [m]β†’[n][m] \to [n] induces a functor Ar⁑[m]β†’Ar⁑[n]\operatorname{Ar}[m] \to \operatorname{Ar}[n], and composition with it gives Snπ’žβ†’Smπ’žS_n \mathcal{C} \to S_m \mathcal{C}. So [n]↦wSnπ’ž[n] \mapsto wS_n \mathcal{C} is a simplicial object in categories, the S-construction wSβˆ™π’žwS_\bullet \mathcal{C}.

The K-theory space of π’ž\mathcal{C} is Ω∣wSβˆ™π’žβˆ£\Omega \abs{wS_\bullet \mathcal{C}}, the loop space of the geometric realization of the nerves, and for nβ‰₯0n \ge 0 the K-groups are Kn(π’ž)=Ο€n+1∣wSβˆ™π’žβˆ£K_n(\mathcal{C}) = \pi_{n+1} \abs{wS_\bullet \mathcal{C}}.

Remarks

Clause 2 says that Ai,j↣Ai,kβ† Aj,kA_{i,j} \rightarrowtail A_{i,k} \twoheadrightarrow A_{j,k} is a cofibration sequence, so Aj,kA_{j,k} is a chosen quotient Ai,k/Ai,jA_{i,k}/A_{i,j}. An object of Snπ’žS_n \mathcal{C} is thus a chain 0=A0,0↣A0,1↣⋯↣A0,n0 = A_{0,0} \rightarrowtail A_{0,1} \rightarrowtail \cdots \rightarrowtail A_{0,n} with all its subquotients chosen. The category S0π’žS_0 \mathcal{C} has one object, S1π’žS_1 \mathcal{C} is equivalent to π’ž\mathcal{C}, and S2π’žS_2 \mathcal{C} is the category of cofibration sequences.

Example: Ο€1∣wSβˆ™π’žβˆ£=K0(π’ž)\pi_1 \abs{wS_\bullet \mathcal{C}} = K_0(\mathcal{C}) is the abelian group generated by the objects of π’ž\mathcal{C}, with [A]=[Aβ€²][A] = [A'] for each weak equivalence Aβ†’βˆΌAβ€²A \xrightarrow{\sim} A' and [B]=[A]+[B/A][B] = [A] + [B/A] for each cofibration sequence. Each object AA gives a 11-simplex, a loop, and each cofibration sequence gives a 22-simplex whose three edges are AA, BB and B/AB/A. For an exact category with the isomorphisms as weak equivalences, Waldhausen showed that ∣wSβˆ™π’žβˆ£\abs{wS_\bullet \mathcal{C}} is homotopy equivalent to the classifying space of the Q-construction.

Non-example: a functor A ⁣:Ar⁑[1]β†’π’žA \colon \operatorname{Ar}[1] \to \mathcal{C} with A0,0=0A_{0,0} = 0, A1,1β‰ 0A_{1,1} \ne 0 is not an object of S1π’žS_1 \mathcal{C}, since it fails clause 1.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
