Definition

Let a∈ℂa \in \C and r>0r > 0, and let D∗={z:0<∣z−a∣<r}D^* = \set{z : 0 < \abs{z - a} < r} be a punctured disc. Let FF be a multivalued function on D∗D^* given by a holomorphic function element that admits analytic continuation along every path in D∗D^*. The point aa is a branch point of FF if some function element of FF changes after continuation once around a circle ∣z−a∣=ρ\abs{z - a} = \rho with 0<ρ<r0 < \rho < r. The point ∞\infty of the Riemann sphere is a branch point of FF if 00 is a branch point of w↦F(1/w)w \mapsto F(1/w).

Remarks

If nn turns around aa bring each element back to itself for some n≥2n \ge 2, the branch point is algebraic, and the least such nn is its order. Otherwise aa is a transcendental branch point; a logarithmic branch point, where no number of turns brings any element back, is the main example. Some authors call n−1n - 1 the order instead of nn. Example: for F(z)=zF(z) = \sqrt{z}, continuing the element e(log⁡z)/2e^{(\log z)/2} once around ∣z∣=1\abs{z} = 1 multiplies it by eiπ=−1e^{i\pi} = -1. So 00 is an algebraic branch point of order 22, and so is ∞\infty, because 1/w\sqrt{1/w} also changes sign around w=0w = 0. The complex logarithm has logarithmic branch points at 00 and ∞\infty, since each turn adds 2πi2\pi i. Non-example: 00 is not a branch point of 1/z1/z, which is single-valued on ℂ∖{0}\C \setminus \set{0}; it is a pole. For a holomorphic map between Riemann surfaces, a point where the map is not locally injective is also called a branch point or ramification point.
